Kids give TRYathlon a crack Jessie Johnston Proud families cheered from the sidelines as local kids swam, biked and ran their way around Tahunanui during this year’s Nelson Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon on Sunday. While a number of records were made during this series of the event, Nelson didn’t quite surpass its 1800 participant record from last year, settling instead for an impressive 1715 entries from children aged between 7 to 15 years. The event encourages children of
all fitness levels to get active in a fun, friendly environment where everyone is a winner for giving the triathlon a go. Depending on their ages, the course featured a 50 to 200 metre swim, a four to eight kilometre bike ride and a one and a half kilometre run, before participants passed over the finish line. Black Sticks women’s hockey team captain Anita Punt, Breakers foundation player Dillon Boucher and former Silver Fern and the most capped international player of all time Irene van Dyk, were all there

to congratulate the kids on finishing the triathlon and present them with their medals. Richmond’s Cameron Nicholls, 10, was amongst those participating on the day, his first time as a TRYathlete was back when he was seven. The fun and fitness that the triathlon offers has seen him come back to the event four years in a row, with rugby and cricket all part of his training. As a series, the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon is the world’s largest sporting event for children.
Fears that Richmond could be the biggest loser in a reshuffle of police staffing levels appear to be unfounded, with Nelson Bays Area Commander Inspector Mat Arnold-Kelly hinting this week that staff numbers at the Richmond station could in fact be boosted. Nelson Bays police are presently reviewing the area’s policing resources and last week an email went out to members of the Richmond Neighbourhood Support group expressing concern about the changes. The email suggested that some police based at the Richmond station could to be centralised to Nelson “leaving us more vulnerable here in Richmond or Waimea”. The email stated that “not having police stationed here is a detriment to our community, especially as it is a fastgrowing community.”

Richmond Community Patrol coordinator Mike Gill had also heard the rumours that included the possibility that the Richmond community constable would be based in Nelson. If that happened, Mike says it would reduce the patrol group’s effectiveness and result in escalating crime in the town. However, Mat told the Waimea Weekly on Monday that “at this stage there is a possibility” that more staff will be based in Richmond under the review of police

stay in touch with the community,” Marty says. “I went to the meeting the police had with the Motueka community and I went to one in Brightwater last night, and it’s clear the community wants the police to keep connecting with the community.” Mat says the review of staffing resources will be completed soon.
Two-car crash
A two-car collision at the roundabout between the Richmond Deviation and Whakatu Dr on Tuesday afternoon “could have been worse” with two of the three people involved only suffering minor injuries. The two cars collided at around 1.30pm after one of the cars appeared to fail to give

An alleged shoplifter was quite literally given a run for his money when Richmond Hospice Shop general manager Karen MacKenzie-Howe gave chase after he stole items from her store. A “slim, short Asian male with greying greasy hair” went into the changing rooms and stole a tee shirt from the Richmond Hospice Shop around 10.45am on Wednesday. Shop manager Karen MacKenzie-Howe retrieved the shirt and discovered he also had a concealed belt stolen from the Red Cross. “I asked him to wait for the police and not embarrass himself but he wouldn’t, he started running and so I thought, ‘I’m going to scream and shout after you like a bloody banshee because you’re not coming back in our shop’,” says Karen. So scream she did, whilst chasing him as far as ANZ bank and videoing the chase on her cell phone. Karen thinks it probably looked hysterical. “I think people would have stepped into help but they were trying to process what was happening, because I was like a bloody old fishwife running up the road shouting and chasing him with a shirt and coat hanger in my hand.”

Photo: Sarah Board. “When I was chasing after him I thought ‘Karen, what are you doing’ but he won’t ever come back to the shop, that’s for sure.” Karen thinks the video is “bloody funny” and sent a copy to her partner, titled “run Forest, run” and “a quiet day in the office”. Unfortunately, Karen says her screaming sprints up and down the street are a regular occurrence. “Some people would think I’m foolish but I’m always doing it, whenever I see thieves I will always be vigilant. “We work so hard to make as much money as we can for the community hospice and no, I am not going to work that hard and let someone walk in and just take what is not theirs.” Karen says the shop do their
best considering the majority of their staff have passed retirement age. “I jumped on someone’s back in the car park one day after he’d stolen a pair of trainers that he’d shoved up his jumper. As I ran round into the car park by the library he was taking them out and putting them in his backpack, so I grabbed him.” And as for punishment, Karen says she prefers traditional methods. “Bring back the village stocks is what I say, make them wear a sandwich board and walk up and down the street.” Police responded not long after the chase and have reviewed Karen’s video footage and CCTV cameras. Classic boats cruise around lake Jessie Johnston
From jet engines to steam-power, the 17th annual New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show had vessels of all kinds. Last weekend’s event attracted around 120 boats, including clinkers, steam launches, classic motorboats, sailing dinghies, and their owners, to Kerr Bay on Lake Rotoiti for displays both on and off the water. Nelson boat owners Newton King and Nicky Murdoch brought their 1960s jetboat Taranui along for the weekend. They purchased Taranui about two years ago after discovering the vessel in the shed of a bach they bought in Tennyson Inlet in 2013. The previous owner believed it had not been in the water for at least 20 years and, once it was brought back to Nelson, it was found to be in near perfect working order. The judges certainly like Taranui, awarding her the CWF Hamilton Trophy for Best Jet-Propelled Boat. While a number of awards were handed out for the different classes, it was the 13ft 8in hydroplane Bel Air III that won the

this boat show is all about - it’s been another fantastic weekend of sunny weather, happy crowds, excellent sailing conditions and great boating.” One of the judges, John Harris, says the standard of boats at the 17th edition of the show made their job difficult. “It’s becoming very hard to judge when there are three or four boats in each category worthy of winning,” he says. “But people are not in it for the prizes, they’re in it for a great day of boating and I’d like to commend them all for their effort and enthusiasm for classic boats.” The New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show was started by Pete in 1999 after he “restored an old classic boat and got interested in the kind of activity that was happening in the States with classic boating”. “I saw that nobody was really doing that kind of thing in New Zealand, so thought I’d give it a go,” he says. Nelson’s James Dyer won the Ron Culley Trophy for Best Steamboat with his 24ft steamboat Shona, while the Best Outboard Motor Boat went to Lance Tighe’s 14ft 1961 De Havilland Playboy, partnership with Zippa.

Our most burgled suburbs revealed
New data released by the New Zealand Police has revealed the Waimea district’s most burgled areas, with Richmond West ranked the worst at 99, ahead of Richmond East on 69 and Wai-iti on 46. The new data is presented in an interactive map on the New Zealand Herald website which shows each reported burglary that has occurred in the district in the 18-month period from July 2014 to December 2015. It gives a detailed breakdown to mesh block level, the smallest geographic unit by which government agencies aggregate data, going down to individual streets.
Nelson Bays Area Commander Inspector Mat Arnold-Kelly says he is yet to see the data, but suggests it fits in with recent trends. However, he stresses that “different suburbs go through trends at different times”. Ranzau (19), Golden Downs (13), Wakefield (12), Aniseed Hill (11) and Brightwater (9) also ranked highly, while, on a street level, Hart Rd with eight and McGlashen Ave and Main Road Hope, both with five, reported the most burglaries. Murchison had a district low of just eight burglaries.

In Nelson, Trafalgar (69), Isel Park (68), Tahunanui (63) and Washington (48) were the worst hit areas. The number of burglaries in Nelson was considerably higher than in the Waimea district. “Tahunanui would definitely fit in with the trends we’ve seen in that time period,” Mat says. Glenduan had the lowest number of burglaries in Nelson at only two, followed by Clifton, at eight. Monday was region’s hottest day in March The MetService has confirmed what we all knew - that Monday was stinking hot, with the temperature gauge on the Network Tasman clock on Richmond’s Queen St briefly hitting 31 degrees Celsius. In fact, the MetService’s communications meteorologist Lisa Murray says the maximum of 29 degrees Celsius that was recorded at Nelson Airport was the hottest March day since records started in 1943. Lisa says the previous March maximum temperatures were 28.3 degrees recorded in 1962 and 27 degrees recorded in 2007. But that was still just short of the 30.3 degrees recorded in Nelson on Christmas Eve, which was the hottest December day since 1943. It was even hotter in Richmond where the temperature reached an unofficial 30 degrees soon after 2pm, briefly jumping to 31 degrees for a few seconds just after 2.40pm. Lisa says Monday’s record March temperature was the result of a “ridge of pressure north-west of us, combined with a light south-westerly flow over the top of the South Island that is strong enough to keep the cooling sea breeze at bay”.

David reaches his first goal Andrew Board David Trotter’s first goal has been achieved, now it’s on to the next – the Wairau Warrior obstacle race. Last month Nelson Weekly ran a front page story on David and his quest to participate in the 6km Wairau Warrior in April, as well as raise $6000 for an all-terrain wheelchair needed for the race. The reaction to the story was strong and swift, and last week an anonymous donor added the final
donation of $2500 needed to buy the wheelchair. Wairau Body Systems owner Greg Witika says he is thrilled the fund-raising goal has been reached. “It took us less time than I thought. He’s relieved and now he can just concentrate on the race. Everyone is over the moon. Just want to thank everyone who chipped in.” To make the final donation even sweeter, it arrived on David’s 44th
Entries open for community awards Entries for the Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards are now open. Run in partnership with the Nelson City and Tasman District councils, and set up as an opportunity to recognise and thank local voluntary groups and their contributions to the community. Anyone can enter a voluntary group or organisation in the awards, including voluntary groups themselves. Since the Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards began in 1999 more than $100,000 has been given away to deserving voluntary groups and organisations, and this year more than $5000 is up for grabs. Last year 91 entries were received for the awards. Trustpower community relations representative Emily Beaton is looking forward to seeing the community get on board to recognise more of these local unsung heroes. “Voluntary groups are a formidable force of good in the community and everyday members benefit from their hard work. “Volunteers are in every corner of this region but often they are not recognised for the invaluable work they do. “These awards are an easy way to say ‘thanks’ and give these local champions the pat on the back that they deserve.” Locals have until 5pm on Friday April 29 to get entries in for this year’s Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards. Nine new zones could house 400 homes More than 400 new homes in nine different locations could be built around Nelson as part of a housing accord passed by Nelson City Council last week. The Special Housing Areas are scattered around the region with an area off Prince’s Drive the biggest, capable of fitting 100 new homes. The housing accord, which is in conjunction with central government, includes specified design controls to ensure “high quality, urban design outcomes”. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says the development will be good news for the vitality of Nelson’s
inner city. “We are driving forward on a range of initiatives to ensure our city centre continues to thrive. The development of Betts Carpark is one of the proposed projects.” Rachel says that Betts Carpark offers the perfect location for such a development. “The site is a few minutes’ walk from Nelson’s hospitality and retail heart. It’s also an easy location from which to walk to the swimming pool, cinema and library.” Housing minister Nick Smith says the programme is to increase new home construction
by facilitating faster planning and consenting. “The advantage of the Special Housing Area status is that it provides a far quicker process for areas to be zoned residential and a streamlined process for consenting. It will enable these 400 additional homes to come on-stream faster,” he says. The nine special housing areas include space for 100 homes off Princes Drive, 60 at Bishopdale Pottery, 40 at the Ocean Lodge, 20 at Betts car park, 21 at Three Ridges, 12 at Barcelona Lofts, 40 at Paru Paru Rd, 18 in Tahuna and at 6 Orchard St.

Richmond teen off to live London dream Simon Bloomberg Talented Richmond teenager Jake Robinson desperately needs to raise funds to get to London to join the Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ Young Shakespeare Company and study at the prestigious London School of Musical Theatre. Last year, Jake, 18, was selected as one of 24 college students to represent New Zealand as a member of the Young Shakespeare Company which will attend workshops and perform at the Globe Theatre in London in July. And things got even better when he was also accepted for a one-year diploma at the London School of Musical Theatre after a successful call-back in London in January. However, Jake says the two amazing opportunities will cost around $50,000, so he has organised a fund-raising concert to be held at the Nelson Musical Theatre on Saturday to help get him to London. Jake will be performing alongside a talented line-up that includes the Nelson Youth Theatre Company, Fargher Academy of Dance, Nelson Musical Theatre, A Star Academy of the Arts, Off Broadway Performing Arts and Soundstage as well as
some of his talented friends. “I’m so excited - it’s going to be awesome. We have some great companies and friends performing so it’s going to be a nice way for me to say goodbye to Nelson.” Jake says he’s looking forward to studying at the London School of Musical Theatre and taking another step towards his goal of becoming a professional performer. He will also be attending a call-back at the prestigious Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in April after a successful audition there in January. The former Garin College student admits moving to London is a big commitment but says it’s necessary to receive “some of the best training in the world. “The London School of Musical Theatre and Mountview are two of the top four schools in London so it’s an amazing opportunity. The whole industry is there in London so it’s also important to be there and be seen to get started.” Jake’s fund-raising concert is titled With A Little Help From My Friends and will be held at the Nelson Musical Theatre at 95 Atawhai Dr on Saturday starting at 7pm. Community garden nearing completion Simon Bloomberg Shoppers and workers in Richmond’s central business district will soon have another beautifully landscaped park to enjoy after the Richmond Methodist Church commenced “a very generous project” this month. The church is giving Wesley Garden, in front of its parish on the corner of Queen St and Wensley Rd, a makeover that will transform it into a userfriendly space for the whole community. Wesley Garden was opened when the present church was built in 1991 and now the church’s parishioners are making the green space
more inviting to the community. Geoff Sherlock of Sherlock Landscaping developed concept plans for the garden’s redesign and this month contractors started excavating the site and laying the foundations for the concrete curbing and new entranceway. “The church has identified a lack of green space in the CBD and decided to make their site more accessible and attractive for the community,” Geoff says. “It’s a very generous project, especially in this day and age when so many people are all about how much money they can make and what they can buy.” Richmond Stoke Parish’s Don-
ald Horne says Wesley Garden has always been open to the public but “it looked private and not appealing”. “We hope the changes result in it becoming well utilised by the community,” Don says. “It will also be able to be used for things like concerts.” Geoff says he expects it to be re-opened later this month, apart from a newly-sown grass area that will be taped off until the grass is established. The Tasman District Council is providing seating for the garden, while an information board illustrating the history of the church will be erected near the new entranceway on the corner of the intersection.

Bike tour goes to the dogs

Chris Burr and Brenda Clapp’s epic bike ride from Cape Reinga to Bluff is going to the dogs and they couldn’t be happier. The well-known Richmond cycling couple arrived in Nelson last Tuesday, just over a week after leaving Cape Reinga at the start of the inaugural 3000km Tour Aotearoa. Chris says they have been averaging around 150km a day on the tour so far but expect that to increase as they hit the faster South Island roads, cycleways and mountainbike tracks. “It’s been amazing,” Chris says. “It’s the greatest holiday ever. “We are averaging around 150km a day, riding 130km on the tougher days and over 200km in the bigger days. We try to get our tent pitched by eight each night and then get back on the road by 6.30 the next morning so they are big days. “Yesterday (last Monday) we punched into a head wind for eight hours which was character building and a bit grim while out the back of the Waikato we climbed for an entire day for a hard-earned 110km.” Chris says the highlights so far have been discovering “just how remote parts of the North Island are” and meeting “some amazing New Zealanders.” “You tend to think of the North Island as a series of cities but you can well and truly get lost and explore the back country”. Chris says the riding has been physically

Last week, they enjoyed a quick lunch at their Richmond home before heading south towards Wakefield and the Pigeon Valley. Although Chris and Brenda seldom need an excuse to get on their bikes and ride off into the distance, their latest cycling adventure is doubling as a fundraiser for the Nelson Ark. They decided to select the Ark as their charity after getting so much enjoyment out of their own rescue dog, Sally. “We’re taking the opportunity to promote
the Nelson Ark when we ride,” Chris says. “The Ark provides an amazing service that brings troubled teens together with SPCA and pound dogs to help them learn compassion, respect and responsibility so it’s a great charity.” Donations can be made to the Ark through their website or givealittle.co.nz/cause/ thenelsonark There are over 20 Nelson cyclists on the tour including champion endurance rider Ollie Whalley who was the first rider to finish after arriving at Bluff last Tuesday. Cannabis haul nets 9000 plants Police have hauled in more than 9000 cannabis plants from this year’s annual sting in the top of the South Island. Police were assisted in the aerial phase of the operation by the Royal New Zealand Airforce, with their NH90 helicopter enabling staff to reach remote areas. Operation commander, senior sergeant Grant Andrews says the number of plants recovered is a significant increase on last year’s result. He says officers located some large commercial outdoor plots along with a number of indoor growing operations. As a result, 13 people are facing a range of drug and firearms charges. About 6000 plants were recovered in the Nelson-Marlborough area of the district and more than 3000 on the West Coast. While the aerial phase has been completed, Grant says there is still a lot of work to be done following up on information gathered and further arrests were likely. He encouraged anyone with information or concerns to contact their local police.

The hashtag says it all, the Mike Pero Nelson Giants will #returntothehanger. Two years after earthquake strengthening issues forced the Giants from their spiritual home, they will once again play their homes games at the Trafalgar Centre from the start of this season. Operations manager of the Giants, Janie Granger, says playing home games at Saxton Stadium over the past two seasons has had some positives, but the Trafalgar Centre – also dubbed the Hanger – is home. “We’re all excited about going home. It will mean more fans, a more intense atmosphere for visiting teams and it just feels right. The hashtag picks up on all that.” For those that aren’t tech-savvy, hashtags help link various comments on social media to one subject. Each team in the National
Basketball League was asked to pick a hashtag for their team. Janie says the move back to the Trafalgar Centre hasn’t been straightforward, with around 250 season ticket holders needing to be contacted to make sure they wanted the seats they had when they were last at the Trafalgar Centre. “We have season ticket holders that go back to the 1980s and they have ‘their’ seats, so that has been a mission. Now we can finally throw the doors open for others who would like to buy season tickets this year.” On the court, captain Sam Dempster says they are gelling well and that showed at the pre-season Blitz tournament in Poirua late last month. The Giants collected wins over competition heavyweights Wellington Saints, as well as the Canterbury Rams and a local side.

Under the umbrella of the New Zealand Fire Service, the Tasman region is home to a number of stations including Murchison, Richmond, Wakefield, Tapawera, Upper Moutere and Mapua, while the Waimea Rural Fire Authority oversees the operation of the regions rural fire forces in Appleby, Hira, Brightwater, Nelson Lakes, Ngatimoti, Tasman, Upper Takaka, Wainui and Marahau. “I belong to a lot of committees and groups,” says chief fire officer for Wakefield, Fritz Buckendahl. “Rate payers, school committees, swimming pool committees and all the rest, I do quite a lot, but all of those things take time to help people, whereas when the siren goes up, the good thing about it is you’re helping someone straight away in their time of need.” “There’s good camaraderie too,” says Bryan Parks who volunteers for the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade. “A lot of good friendships get built.

Fire trucks were called to an electrical fire on Queen St in Richmond last year. “You have experiences with people that you can’t have with anybody else and that builds a different level of friendship because you’ve shared something, it could be something quite extreme.” Although volunteer fire fighters get a lot of satisfaction out of helping people and keeping their community safe, their love of the job is also recognised and appreciated by the public as it goes hand in hand with a number of sacrifices. “You’re dealing with a lot of hardships and its not very nice seeing people distressed, that’s probably the only thing that sort of gets under my skin,” says Bryan. “It can make it a bit tough sometimes, especially when you’ve got a busy diary and the siren goes off, I run out the door and say to Jill ‘ring my clients’ and then she has to go through and reorganise everything.” While fighting fires is obviously all part of the job description, there’s a lot more to being a volunteer fire fighter than the name suggests. “We go to a lot of motor vehicle accidents and a lot more of the medical call outs now,” says Fritz. “They call us a first responding brigade because the Richmond ambulance is over eight minutes away. We don’t go to many fires now days because modern houses don’t burn. “They call it a purple call out, [when someone’s
life is threatened]. We carry an AED and we’re all trained in CPR so we can start that straight away and we have the other tools such as a monitoring kit so that when St John arrives, we are able to give them some of the stats including heart rate and breathing. We try to make the patients a lot more comfortable prior to the ambulance getting there.” The role of the region’s brigades varies depending on the needs of the community in which they operate. The New Zealand Fire service volunteers are equipped with a breathing apparatus in order to enter buildings, and cutting equipment for extracting patients during motor vehicle accidents. These brigades are also called upon to deal with hazardous chemical alerts, flooding and other civil defence situations, and of course, the odd misplaced pet. The rural forces are primarily focused on vegetation and structure fires, with the ability to perform first aid, and their role at motor vehicle accidents being the management of traffic. When it comes to the initial attack of the fire in a rural setting, the volunteer fire forces and brigades, both urban and rural, will attend, but anything that goes beyond the initial attack requires the assistance of a coordinator and management team including people from local

In severe situations, crews and administration staff are also brought in from further afield. “The fact we haven’t had any large fires this season, the last two or three years and going back in time, is a testament to having those volunteers available,” says principal rural fire officer, Ian Reade. “They’re the first to the scene, they contain it within half an hour and if we didn’t have them we would have some pretty devastating fires. They give their time freely to train and be available and its not just the people in the crews, its also their families who allow them to do that, and their employers that allow them to disappear or not turn up to work.”

the winery, you never know what’s round the corner,” says Hermann. Volunteers’ dedication to protecting communities isn’t just limited to their own, recently the Waimea Rural Fire Authority sent two crews and a task force leader to Australia to assist with fires in Tasmania and Victoria. Provided they pass the medical and fitness tests and have the appropriate experience, any member of the fire forces can put their hand up to help. This year was the second time Nathan Palmer, a member of the Brightwater Rural Volunteer Fire Force, volunteered to fight fires in Australia. “It’s nearly three weeks of dealing with preschoolers on your own,” says his wife, Rebecca. “You always worry, every time he goes away I’m worried that something’s going to go wrong, but I trust him because he’s a very logical person. “I think it’s important that volunteers are out there, it’s a good cause and that’s why I support my husband doing it, it’s his passion really, he loves it and wants to be part of it.” While every volunteer fire fighter is likely to agree the job is no walk in the park, they also believe the satisfaction that comes from the service they provide, far out ways any of the negative aspects. Even if it’s only the smallest curiosity in becoming part of a rural fire force or fire service brigade, take the time to contact the chief fire officer of your nearest station and find out more about what it takes to become a volunteer fire fighter.

While some volunteers run their own businesses, there are many who rely on the support of their employers in order to be 100 per cent available should the siren sound. Just a thought… Should I write this for just church-goers or for non-church-goer people? This is a question I have had in my mind ever since I was given the opportunity to write for this column. You may not read this if you are not a churchgoer because you are not interested in the church at all. Or you may read this out of curiousity to know about others’ opinions on the matter of Christianity. I would like to encourage you to start or restart your faith journey if you are currently not on a faith journey.
Special spade wanted for planting
Two information panels detailing the history of the Golden Downs’ village and woodsmen school are soon to be unveiled, in conjunction with a reunion of ex forestry workers. Starting on Saturday, March 19, the reunion will include a display of old forestry memorabilia but organisers are missing an important piece of the exhibition. A planting spade, dating back to the very first plantings at Golden Downs in the 1920s, did belong to an ex-forestry worker in the area but has since been lost. Local teams win hockey titles The Nelson men’s hockey teams were a force to be reckoned with in the 2016 New Zealand Hockey Masters at Saxton Field last week. The 35+ and 45+ men’s teams walked off the turf a little out of breath but with their heads held high after winning their hard-fought finals. The Nelson Men’s 35+ team were tied 1-1 with Wellington at full time but dominated the penalty shoot out, winning 3-1. Men’s 35+ manager, player and team organiser Marcel Stutz says it’s been a great week. “It’s been really good, we hadn’t really met each other until the first game on Monday morning, but we’ve really come together. We’ve got a few locals, some Marlborough boys, and a few Auckland guys, but we

gelled really well and we’re all good guys and players, so that’s key.” The Men’s 45+ team faced Auckland in their final and went home with a convincing 2-0 win, while the Women’s 35+ team also made the finals, receiving silver after a 5-0 defeat against Manawatu. Nelson’s five other teams placed further back in the field, finishing between fourth and seventh in their age groups. Tournament administrator Diane Proudfoot saw all the results pour in and says she’s seen some outstanding hockey over the past week. “It’s great having so many teams up here, we’ve had some really good players and the Nelson teams have all really performed within their age
groups,” says Diane. “It’s been a pretty high standard with some very tightly fought matches. We had the Men’s 60+ final on Friday night and that was fantastic, there was a draw at the end so they had to go to penalty shoot out, it was amazing.” The tournament saw 69 teams from Northland to Canterbury and everywhere in between, with 1100 players descending on the Saxton Field turfs. This is the second time Nelson has hosted the Hockey Masters and Diane says it certainly won’t be the last. “It’s amazing to be able to open up the region and Nelson hockey to the rest of New Zealand, and a massive part of that is because of the local hockey community in Nelson.”

Ingrid Richter finished second in the women’s race, completing the 50km in 2hr 51min 29sec, while Sandy Vincent was fifth in 3hr 15min 31sec. Henry Jaine was fifth in the men’s race in 2hr 22min 37sec. TRIATHLON The Tineli Team Triathlon will be held at Rabbit Island on Sunday with the first wave of swimmers starting at 8.30am. IRONMAN Mark Corlet, Louise Corbett and Richard Bamfield recorded sub-12 hour finishes at the Nutri-Grain Ironman New Zealand held at Taupo on Saturday. Richard completed the 3.9km swim, 180km cycle and 42.2km run in 10hr 25min 37sec to finish 11th in his 50-54 age group, while Mark was 29th in the same age group in 11hr 41min 14sec. Louise made an impressive Ironman debut finishing fourth in her 50-54 age group in 11hr 48min 31sec. Donna Shaw (45-49) finished in 12hr 13min 37sec, Stu Hague finished in 15hr 14min 7sec while Yvonne Shaw recorded 15hr 17min 59sec.

It will be the first test of a three-test series for the Taini Jamison Trophy. RUNNING Ten Nelson distance runners will have a big day out on Saturday when they traverse the 85km Old Ghost Road in the Old Ghost Ultra. Pink golf day raises money for Cancer Society Totaradale golf course looked a lot more colourful than usual last Thursday when 62 ladies from clubs all over Nelson and Tasman dressed-up for the Fifty Shades of Pink tournament to raise funds for the Nelson Cancer Society. The Totaradale ladies decided to organise a pink-themed fundraiser after one of their popular members, Anne Dobbie, passed away in January after suffering from cancer. Fifty Shades of Pink raised $1640 for the Nelson Cancer Society with some of that coming from a raffle for Anne's
electric golf trundler which she asked husband Bruce to donate to the club before she died. "We normally have a picnic day tournament, but this year we decided to make it a fund-raiser for the Cancer Society after one of the girls passed away earlier this year," one of the organisers, Fran Sutherland, says. "All the prizes have been donated by local businesses and all the proceeds will go to the Nelson Cancer Society." Fran says ladies club president Sue Rawson was the driving force behind Fifty Shades of Pink, which also fea-
tured pink balloons attached to all the tee markers and pink table cloths at the luncheon. The prize for the Best Dressed team was won by the Sugar Plum Fairies, Cay Cockerell, Marg Hall, Clare Heslop and Marcelle Porritt, who played with pink fairy wings, while the more serious prize of the winning team went to Marg Orman, Linda Ujihara, Andrianne Wislang and Cherie Hancock. Cherie also won the division one individual stableford, Ros McKeown won division two and Linda won the division three competition.

nine years, umpired at national level after gaining her New Zealand umpiring badge in 2002 and is involved in assessing and coaching umpires. "Maree's efforts for local umpires has encouraged and inspired many players and umpires to continue to higher levels. She has had a massive influence on our umpiring development." Julie says Marilyn is "one of our pivotal volunteers" and has given "hundreds and hundreds of hours of time and energy dedicated to filling just about every possible role in netball for over 50 years". Julie says Marilyn has been especially passionate about college netball and fostering young umpires at the Future Ferns level. She also acts as a technical official, supporting and training other volunteers - she has also officiated at ANZ championship games. Marilyn's award was the second one she received in the last month after earlier being made a Life Member of the Nelson Netball Centre.

Simon Bloomberg Three Nelson netball volunteers received "thoroughly deserved" recognition for years and years of service when they were presented with Service Awards at the Netball New Zealand annual general meeting in Auckland last week. Jane Andrew, Maree Smith and Marilyn Milne were presented with their awards after being nominated by Nelson Netball Centre. The trio have been involved in the sport, first as players then in a range of roles including coaching, administration and umpiring, for a combined total of well over 150 years, and Nelson Netball Centre board chairperson Julie Baxendine says the centre is incredibly proud of their achievements. Jane joined the Nelson College Old Girls Club after moving to Nelson from the North Island in 1988. She soon became involved in coaching school, club and representative teams before becoming a hard-working administrator she started the long-running Geraldine Hodgson Tournament and founded the Prices Netball Club during her lengthy involvement in the region's netball. "Her passion, knowledge and love of the sport is immense," Julie says. Although Maree Smith has been a talented player and dedicated administrator, she has also made a significant contribution to the sport in umpiring. She has been convener of Nelson Umpires for

Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be mistaken. Keep me reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a saint - some of them are so hard to live with - but a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil.
